Full Coverage for Damaged Teeth

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns cap a weakened or broken tooth so it can handle everyday biting and chewing again. Think of a dental crown as a custom-fitted shell that slides over the remaining tooth structure, restoring its original shape and strength. Dental crowns are common after Root Canals, large fractures, or when old tooth fillings have left too little healthy tooth behind. We reshape the tooth, takes precise measurements, and bonds the dental crown in place.

Today's dental crowns are made from porcelain, zirconia, or pressed ceramic that matches your surrounding teeth in color and translucency. Most people sitting across from you at dinner would never spot one. Our team in Waco, TX places dental crowns that are built to last, often ten years or longer with normal care and regular Dental Cleanings.

Built to Last, Made to Match

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns do more than protect a damaged tooth. They bring back the strength and shape you need to chew, speak, and smile without thinking twice.

  • Bite Down Without Hesitating

A dental crown covers the full surface of a weakened tooth and absorbs your normal bite force. Steak, apples, crusty bread. You stop avoiding foods and just eat.

  • Blends Right In With Your Smile

Your dentist matches the dental crown's shade, shape, and translucency to the teeth around it. Most people, including you, won't be able to spot which tooth was restored.

  • Saves the Tooth You Still Have

A dental crown holds a cracked or root-canal-treated tooth together so it can keep working for years. Without one, that same tooth often ends up needing Tooth Extractions down the line.

Who Needs Dental Crowns?

If we have pointed out a crack, a large old tooth filling that's starting to fail, or a tooth weakened after Root Canals, dental crowns are likely the next step. They're one of the most common restorations placed in Waco, TX, and for good reason. A dental crown fits over the entire visible portion of a damaged tooth, giving it back the strength to handle everyday biting and chewing without worry.

Kids with badly decayed baby molars sometimes need them too, though most dental crown patients are adults dealing with years of wear. Teeth ground down by clenching, fractured by an unexpected bite on something hard, or hollowed out by deep decay all respond well. Dental crowns also cap Dental Implants when a tooth is missing entirely. The restoration is predictable, durable, and built to match your surrounding teeth.

BEYOND THE SURFACE

Advanced Dental Crowns Technology

Digital scanning has replaced the messy putty impressions that used to trigger gag reflexes and taste complaints. A small handheld wand maps every contour of your prepared tooth in about two minutes, creating a 3D model accurate to roughly 30 microns. That digital file goes straight to the lab, cutting out a step where distortion used to creep in with traditional molds.

Zirconia, the material used in many of today's dental crowns, is nearly five times stronger than older all-porcelain options. It resists chipping under heavy bite force, which matters if you clench at night or enjoy Texas-sized steaks. At Steven T. Cutbirth DDS, shade-matching technology lets us dial in the exact color and opacity so the finished dental crown blends right in with your natural teeth.

Simple Care, Radiant Results

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your dentist numbs the tooth and surrounding area before any work begins, so you feel pressure but not pain. The tooth gets reshaped to make room for the dental crown, and then a digital or putty impression captures the exact fit. A temporary crown goes on to protect the tooth while your permanent one is made. Most visits run about an hour.

The temporary crown feels a little different against your tongue, but you get used to it fast. When your permanent dental crown is ready, usually within two weeks, you come back for a short seating appointment. Your dentist checks the bite, makes small adjustments, and bonds it in place. Most people are chewing normally the same day.

Before Your Appointment

  • 01

Eat a full meal before your appointment since the numbing around your dental crowns prep can last two to three hours afterward.

  • 02

Mention any sensitivity or pain in the tooth being crowned so your dentist can check for deeper issues before shaping it.

  • 03

Skip gum or sticky snacks the morning of your visit to keep the tooth surface clean for bonding the temporary crown.

After Your Appointment

  • 01

Chew on the opposite side of your mouth for the first 24 hours to let the cement around your new dental crowns fully set.

  • 02

Skip sticky foods like caramel and taffy for the first week, since they can pull on a dental crown before it bonds completely.

  • 03

Brush around the dental crowns gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush, and slide floss out sideways rather than snapping it up through the contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most dental crowns last 10 to 15 years, and many hold up well beyond that with good oral hygiene. Porcelain and zirconia tend to outlast other materials, especially on back teeth that handle heavy chewing forces.

  • Yes. Once the permanent dental crown is bonded in place, you can eat just about anything. Biting into hard candy or chewing ice is worth avoiding since those habits can crack natural teeth too.

  • When more than half the tooth structure is gone, a dental crown protects the remaining tooth far better than a tooth filling. Large tooth fillings can flex under bite pressure and cause cracks over time. A dental crown wraps the whole tooth for stability.

  • Porcelain and zirconia crowns resist staining much better than natural enamel. Coffee and red wine won't discolor them the way they affect your other teeth. Regular Dental Cleanings keep the margins looking sharp.

  • The dental crown itself won't decay, but the natural tooth underneath still can if bacteria reach the margin. Keeping up with Dental Exams & X-rays lets your dentist catch any issues at the gumline early, before they become bigger problems.
